What is Confirmation?
“By the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (CCC, 1285)
When someone is confirmed, the bishop (or his delegate) following a prayer lays hands on the persons being confirmed and then anoints them with Sacred Chrism.
As is the case with all the sacraments, Confirmation draws us closer in relationship to Jesus and his bride the Church (see Acts 8:14-17). However, the only way this relationship can be actualized in our lives is through faith in Jesus, our active participation in prayer with Jesus, and staying connected with his bride the Church.
Confirmation in the Bible
To read a few passages about Confirmation in sacred scripture, feel free to read these passages:
Acts 8:14-19; Acts 19:1-6; 2 Cor. 1:21-22
Preparation?
Faith formation classes are required to receive Confirmation. The purpose of these classes are to enrich the person to be confirmed in order that he or she may have a basic grasp of the Catholic faith and grow in a personal relationship with Jesus. There will be a written or oral exam by the pastor to see the readiness of each person. One must know the basics of Christian doctrine and living.
