What is Baptism?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church mentions, “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word.’” (CCC, 1213)
Baptism in the Bible
To read some of the passages about Baptism in sacred scripture, feel free to read these passages.
Matthew 28:19-20; John 3:5; Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 12:13
Preparation
For an infant or child baptism (below age 7) there are usually one or two meetings with the parents. You may also ask for more meetings if you would like to learn more about the Catholic faith.
For a youth baptism (Ages 7-14) there are a number of classes the youth would need to attend. In most cases the person will receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion during the same Mass.
For an adult baptism (14 and older) there are a series of classes one would need to attend so that one may have the best preparation possible. The individual will also receive first Holy Communion and Confirmation at the same time. Please visit with the pastor for more information.
If you are already baptized and are interested in becoming Catholic, visit with the pastor.
When is Baptism celebrated?
Baptism is usually celebrated after the Saturday evening Vigil Mass in Killdeer or after Sunday Mass in Halliday and Twin Buttes. For adults it is at the Easter Vigil Mass.
Sponsors (godparents)
The person receiving baptism is asked to have at least one (1) sponsor who is Catholic. To be a sponsor one must fulfill the requirements below. Each sponsor will also be asked to state in writing that he/she meets these requirements. The form can be found at the top of this page.
**Note: Baptized Catholics who have left the Catholic Church, or are no longer practicing the Catholic Faith, cannot serve as a Sponsor or Christian Witness. If you wish to choose a person who has left or is not practicing, request that they return to the Catholic Faith. After receiving the Sacrament of Confession with the intention to live in the Church Jesus established, then he/she may serve as a sponsor or godparent.
If one chooses, there may be two (2) Catholic sponsors, one male and one female, but not more than two sponsors. If there are two sponsors, both must meet the requirements mentioned above. It is each sponsor’s duty to help the parents raise the child in practicing the Catholic faith. The Church does not allow someone to be a sponsor who does not meet these requirements since they would not be able to pass on what they themselves do not practice or believe.
If for some reason the sponsor(s) is unable to attend the baptismal liturgy or ceremony, another adult may stand in as a proxy for the sponsor. The proxy has no requirements, but must be older than 16 years of age.
It is also possible that a baptized Christian (who is not a baptized Catholic) could take part in the baptismal liturgy if there is only one sponsor. He/she must be of the opposite sex of the sponsor. If you see this as a possibility speak to the baptismal coordinator about it.
